Manon, my new adoptive niece. A typical 16 yr old whose world is crashing down upon her. Or so she thinks. I teased her about boyfriends, school, life, the universe and everything. She had never had an adult talk to her directly, as an equal. All the adults in her life were in positions of power. I raised my crooked index finger, looked at her with one eye, "I'm proud to know you." Her eyes filled to the brim but not a tear fell. Tough kid. Her big old smile was reward enough.

Life is hard when you are 16! I remember. You just want to belong to someone, to something. Adults can be dismissive of these concerns.
